The Nikon D5100, Nikon's latest camera, meant for the entry level user, goes against the Canon 600D.
Right, both have the tilty swivly screen. Which makes them both very good for some nice HD Video shooting. Both come with Image Stabilization, or how Nikon calls it, Vibration Reduction. Both have a pop-up flash, and auto guide modes for beginners.
I never like Nikon designs, but I love their image quality. Canon too does take some absolutely beautiful pictures. I'm comparing two brands here. Which I shouldn't do. So, I'll just go to a new paragraph now.
And it's somewhat simple, Nikon fanboys will go for the Nikon, and vice versa. But, it's not about that. Keep in mind these are entry level cameras. The people who will buy it are probably just getting fed up of their point and shoot and want to try something much more powerful which gives them the advantage of bigger image sensors, interchangeable lenses and most of all, at least for me, manual creative control.

Canon is better is video, no doubt.

At the end of the day, I have to conclude like all other reviews, which are really true, it is always personal preference, do not be effected by the brand, even reviews, if you like the camera and are comfortable using it. The best camera is the camera you have, be it the iPhone 2G's camera or a Hasselblad. Wait, that was too much, wasn't it ?
Both cameras are masterpieces and absolutely phenomenal. The best way to judge two cameras, buy both of them, because you will need a lot of time to find the differences that actually influence your photograph. Who cares if the Canon has 1.8 MP more than the Nikon these days ?
One day someone said the thing I truly oppose "The Camera does it all". I wanted to remove him from my friends list from Facebook. Who in this world presses the shutter button ? (If it's not set to self portrait), who does the real settings ? Going with the Auto modes will give you mediocre results, stick stick to Manual mode, Av or A and Tv or S modes for true photography bokehlicious fun.
